Herbert E. Light


Herbert “Herb” Eugene Light, 82, of Independence, Missouri, died peacefully Sunday, July 10, 2016 at the Veterans Home in Warrensburg, MO.  Memorial services will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday July 24th at New Salem Funeral Home in Independence, with visitation at 2:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, please send donations to West Central Veterans Assistance League, Missouri Veterans Home, 1300 Veterans Road, Warrensburg, MO 64093. valwbg.org/give-to-val/give-to-val-donations/

Herb was born on August 11, 1933 in Hoxie, Arkansas to Dalton and Florence Light, the second of three boys. He joined the Army in May 1953, and served in the Korean War in Germany and later in the National Guard.  Herb married Louise Cravens on April 14, 1956.  He graduated college from Arkansas State University with a degree in business.  Herb and Louise then moved to Independence in 1957, where he worked at General Motors for 36 years, with six of those years at the GM plant in Mexico.  After retirement Herb enjoyed photography and traveled extensively. He was skilled at wood working and has made many beautiful furniture pieces. Herb loved his family and friends and will be remembered as a generous and caring man.

Herb and Louise enjoyed 60 years of marriage and have two daughters, Deborah Light and Susan (Husband: Russell) Pratt; three grandchildren: Sean and Ryan Pratt, and Rachel Lowry; brother, Billy James (Wife: Edna) Light; and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Dee Light.

  1. Herb was a very kind, passionate, good, and loving person. You could tell he genuinely cared about people. Herb was very easy to talk to and had an easy to be with presence about him.
