James W. Wright Jr.


James “Jim” Wilbur Wright, Jr., 69, of Grain Valle, Missouri passed away Thursday, March 8, 2007 at Specialty Hospital of Mid America, Overland Park, Kansas, after a long struggle with kidney failure and many years of dialysis, and more recently, a stroke. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2007 at Valley Memorial Gardens, 100 Royer Lane, Grain Valley. Friends and family are invited to the Wright’s Grain Valley home after the service to share fellowship and light refreshments. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Grain Valley Assistance Council in care of the funeral home.

Jim was born on July 16, 1937, in Kansas City, Missouri, the only child of James W. and Inez L. (Wyatt) Wright, Sr. He attended Southwest High School. Jim married Sharon E. Pickernell on June 9, 1973. He spent years perfecting him banjo playing. During his showbiz career, he was known as the “Prince of the Banjo”. He played many engagements around the country including the Brush Creek Follies, the Levy, Shakey’s Pizza Parlors, and country fairs. Jim also appeared on the Lawrence Welk TV Show, the Arthur Godfrey radio show, and even played with the Chiefs’ own Tony DiPardo. Jim’s musical talents were reflected in his daughters through Gretchyn’s dance and Kristin’s instrumental musical abilities. After giving up his full-time music career, he went on to work for the Federal Government, and retired from the Social Security Administration in 2000. Jim spent many hours fishing and hunting. His love of the outdoors was passed on to his son, Eric. Jim loved to talk to anyone who would listen. He also had a real passion for Civil War history.

Jim leaves behind his wife of 33 years, Sharon Wright of the home; daughters, Gretchyn Wright of St. Louis, MO and Kristin Wright of Destin, Fl; and one son, Eric Wright of the home.
