Laura J. Herdman


Mrs. Laura Jean Herdman, 76, of Lake Lotawana, MO, embraced her Lord on Monday, August 15, 2011 at Independence, MO.  Services will be held at the Community of Christ Church, 27507 E. Colbern Rd., (near Lake Lotawana) on Thursday, August 18, 2011.  Visitation will be 5:30 –6:30 pm with funeral service at 6:30 pm.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Community of Christ World Hunger Fund.

Laura was born to Otto & Laura Heins of Sweet Springs, MO, on February 18, 1935, and she lived most of her life in Missouri.  She was a retired social worker who worked at The Groves at Independence, and Lee’s Summit Hospital.  She received her BS from the Univ. of Central MO, and M.S.W. from the Univ. of KS.

Mrs. Herdman was a priesthood member of the Community of Christ, having served in the Colbern Road Congregation since 1968.  She held membership in the United Nations, KC Chapter, Missouri Impact, The Groves Auxiliary, and International Graphoanalysis Society.  She also served as a Jackson County Election Judge.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jim, two brothers, and six sisters.

Her survivors are step-children: Jerry O’Neil of CA and Michelle Herdman of SC, whom she raised; and step-grandchildren Billy Thaxton III and Ashley & Jack O’Neil; and several nieces and nephews.
