LaVern Schafer


LaVern Schafer, 90, of Sun City, Arizona died on the evening of December 29, 2018. He was staying with his daughter, Tammy and son-in-law, Richard at their home in Independence, MO. He was surrounded by his wife and daughter when he closed his eyes for the last time.

He was born March 25, 1928 to Alexander and Clara Schafer in Fort Collins, CO and lived in Grand Junction, CO and Phoenix, AZ. LaVern married Ariel Waters on September 30, 1949. LaVern was a loving husband, great father and a loyal friend to all of those who knew him. He proudly served his country in the Army from 1954 to 1956. His life work included farming and trucking.

He is survived by his wife, Ariel Schafer; children, Ronald Schafer of Wilmington, DE and Tammy Schafer of Independence; brothers, Richard (Mary Kate) Schafer, Larry (Karen) Schafer of Grand Junction, CO and Dean (Dorothy) Schafer of Sun City, AZ; three grandchildren, Eric, Lauren and Lindee; and one great-granddaughter, Kinslee.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 7th in the Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 6th at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary & Crematory in Grand Junction, CO. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Heart of America Chapter, 3846 W. 75th Street, Prairie Village, KS 66208 or to Crossroads Hospice, 14310 East 42nd Street South, Unit 600, Marketplace Shopping Center, Independence, MO 64055.
