Mary Lucile Hughes Temple was born on January 29, 1907, and Enterprise, Missouri, to parents Samuel Collins Hughes and Mary Virginia Rider Hughes. She passed into God’s care on February 22, 2007. Lucile was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Gilbert Edgar Temple, and her brother, William Marvin Hughes. Lucile leaves a legacy of love and compassion through family and friends.
Lucile is survived by a brother, Eugene Rider Hughes, three children, Dale Edgar Temple and wife Betty of Little Rock, Arkansas, Sandra Sue Temple Elliott and husband Ed of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and Donald Wayne Temple and wife Sharon of Holly Lake Ranch, Texas, seven grandchildren, Doug Temple and wife Missy of Little Rock, Arkansas, Cara Temple Steely and husband Mike of Little Rock, Arkansas, Glenn Elliott and wife Kari Of Sammamish, Washington, Gregg Elliott and Shawn of Alamosa, Colorado, Grant Elliott and partner Patricia of Kansas City, Missouri, Garrett Temple and wife Amy of Mansfield, Texas, Stacy Temple McCraw and husband Eric of Leander, Texas. Lucile is survived by many nieces and nephews and 11 great-grandchildren.
Lucile graduated high school in Henrietta, Missouri, and immediately launched a career working for the J.C. Penney Company. During her professional career, she worked for Sears & Roebuck, Leavitt Gas, the Collector’s Office in Jackson County, Missouri and as a secretary for the Grain Valley, Missouri schools. She met her husband, Gilbert, while working for J.C. Penney in Lexington, Missouri. They were married June 2, 1935. Gilbert was a noted educator and, at the time of their marriage, Superintendent of schools at Rayville, Missouri. Together they serve various public schools in the State of Missouri until Gilbert’s retirement.
Lucile‘s roles in life as a daughter, granddaughter, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother and friend were all very important to her, but she especially loved supporting and nurturing all the children in her life. She was known by all for her quick, engaging smile, her encouraging words of support and her positive attitude about life and living.
Lucile served in numerous volunteer capacities during her lifetime, was an active in church-life in the various communities where the family lived and worked diligently to support those men and women who served her communities as firefighters and police officers. She was a member of the Jackson County coordinating Council on Aging since 1979, a Buckner, Missouri Lioness Club charter member, Jackson County Democrat Club, Buckner, Missouri Senior Citizen Happy Hour (president for 3 years), Grain Valley Christian Women’s Fellowship and Methodist Aid. A volunteer position she cherished was working as a Red Cross nurse in the health room of the Buckner Elementary School for 12 years. She was a lifetime member in Eastern Star and was forever honored to have been selected as Parade Marshall in 1991 at the Buckner, Missouri, Lewis and Clark Days.
She was a devout Christain who lived a principled, moral and ethical life and uttered perhaps her strongest words of objection to behavior and events by saying, “Thunder”.
Lucile‘s life is honored in memorialized in a patchwork quilt named appropriately “Miss Lucille”. The quilt inspired by Miss Lucile the person, depicts events, people, joys, pleasures in stages of her life which were filled with love, family, church and friends.
Visitation will be at 12:00 Noon with the service to follow at 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 26, 2007 at Royer funeral home, Green Valley, Missouri. Burial will be at the Sunny Slope Cemetery, Richmond, Missouri. Memorial contributions are suggested to 1st Christian Church, Buckner, Missouri or Mar Saline Manor Care Center, Marshall, Missouri.
