Richard D. Shafer


Richard Dean Shafer, 63, of Independence, Missouri, passed away Sunday, November 4, 2018 at his home.   Memorial services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, November 16th at Immanuel Baptist Church, 112 W. 23rd Street, Independence, MO.  Lunch will be served in the church’s dining area immediately following the service.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the family ℅ Justin Sullins.

Richard was born January 1, 1955, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Alba Ray and Josephine (Canfield) Shafer.  He graduated in 1973from William Chrisman High School in Independence.  Richard was self-employed in auto body repair, where he was a denting and painting technician.  He loved cats and had several throughout his life.  They were his pride and joy.  Richard had the memory of an elephant and could remember names, times, and dates with ease.  He loved being around his family and friends and will be sadly missed by all.

Richard leaves behind his son, Justin Sullins and wife Jennifer; two grandsons: Jonathan & Jack Sullins, all of Liberty, MO; sister, Cynthia Shafer Horn; three nieces: Amy chitwood, Sarah Horn, and Mary Horn, all of St. Charles, MO; four great-nephews: Charlie, Jack, Noah, and Alden; special friend, Vickey Hamblen and husband John; long-time and best friend, Dennis McMichael and wife Cynthia; and several cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
