Robert L. Rehmsmeyer

Robert Lee Rehmsmeyer, 83, of Blue Springs, Missouri, passed away on Monday, June 29, 2020.  Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7th in Higginsville City Cemetery in Higginsville, MO.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 6th at Royer Funeral Home in Grain Valley, MO.

Bob was born September 9, 1936 in Higginsville, Missouri.  He was an only child raised by Ralph and Ruby Rehmsmeyer in their small Higginsville home.  Bob was always proud that his mother would provide sandwiches to the homeless people traveling through town on the freight trains that passed behind their house.  Bob’s love of music started at a young age.  He was excited to be in the school band, playing the snare drum all through high school.  Up until his passing, he enjoyed old time rock-n-roll, big band, and jazz music.

In 1956, after moving to Kansas City for work, Bob met a tall, young blond named Donna Schloman who became the love of his life.  After a yearlong courtship, they married on June 29, 1957.  Bob and Donna spent the next 58 years showing an enduring love through various challenges, achievements, joys, and celebrations…including their two children.

After over thirty years working for KCP&L, Bob retired and quickly joined his son in turning his and Donna’s passion into a family business called R&R Depot.  He was very proud and excited about the many antiques they collected over the years, and spent countless hours looking at and redecorating the many shelves full of precious items.  Bob would speak of the memories that were brought to his mind and how, after her passing, he would talk to Donna about the various items and the memories of them together. Visitors would note how his house looked like a museum.  While looking at the many treasures, Bob would share past and current stories about his busy life and those of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Bob always had a desire to live life to the fullest.  Although many thought he would wither after Donna’s passing, he continued to thrive.  Even as his knees gave out, he never slowed down, becoming even more active in the community.  Bob led exercise classes at Vesper Hall three times a week.  After the classes he would eat lunch with his friends; but not before he provided them all with drinks and silverware.  Of course, after lunch, but not before everyone was finished eating and done talking, he would clear the table.  He had many very good friends at Vesper, including a gentleman named Ricky who he was quite fond of and became close to. He loved the ladies at the front desk and, often times, noted how he missed them and his friends dearly during the quarantine.

Bob joined his wife Donna in heaven on their 63rd anniversary.  He was also reunited with his parents.  He is survived by daughter, Tammy (Bob) Lewis; son, Rob (Jaime) Rehmsmeyer; four grandchildren, Machele Cave, Melissa Lewis, Andrew Rehmsmeyer, and Levi Cave; and two great-grandchildren, Pierce Cave and Tracie Cave.

Memorial contributions can be made to Truman Heartland Community Foundation, 4200 Little Blue Pkwy., Suite 340, Independence, MO 64057 in care of Vesper Hall.
