Veta Alice Whitaker, 92, of Blue Springs, MO, passed away Friday, August 21, 2015 at her home. Visitation will be 5:00-6:00 pm Wednesday, August 26th at the New Salem Funeral Home, Independence, MO; funeral service will follow at 6:00 pm. Graveside service will be 10:00 am Thursday, August 27th at New Salem Cemetery, Independence. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Samaritan’s Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607.
Veta was born on March 13, 1923 in Iberia, MO, the daughter of James & Bertha (Ponder) Earp. She married Spurgeon Whitaker in April, 1940 and he preceded her in death in 1998. Veta was a homemaker and mother.
She was preceded in death by 6 brothers & sister-in-laws: Freddie Earp, Claude & Barbara Earp, Lester Earp, Phillip & Lucille Earp, George & Jean Earp, and David Earp; 2 sisters & 1 brother-in-law: Mae Davenport and Ruby & Carl Jones.
Her survivors include a daughter: Alta (Daniel) Hoff of Blue Springs; 3 grandchildren: Kevin Hoff, Kelly (Sandra) Hoff, and Kimberly (Tony) Taylor; 5 great-grandchildren: Jessica (Jordan) Christian, Ashley (Michael) Jones, Lauren Hoff, Jonah Taylor & Jaylee Taylor; sister-in-law: Alice Earp (widow of David Earp); sister-in-law: Anna Lee Allen and many nieces & nephews.
