
Charles Richard Griggs, 74, of Oak Grove, MO, passed away August 26, 2021, in his home surrounded by his loving wife of 34 years and his children who always made him proud!
Richard retired in September 2008 from the Kansas City Star after 26 years of service. He received many awards for his involvement with the United Way Campaign, Project Warmth and Christmas in July. In retirement, Richard and Carol enjoyed many adventures together that included, hiking, biking, working out the gym, shooting compound bows, and grandparenting.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Carmella Griggs of Holden, MO, and his brother-in-law, Dave O’Dell of Shawnee, OK.
Richard leaves behind his wife Carol “Turner” Griggs of the home; his two sons, Rick Griggs (wife Liz) of Peculiar, MO and Steve Griggs (wife Mandy) of Oak Grove, MO; his three daughters: Shannan Russell (husband Mike) of Oak Grove, MO, Sherry Bell (husband Austin) of Lenexa, and Tammie McGautha (husband Dan) of Blue Springs, MO; his three sisters: Rita Warren of Conroe, TX, Eileen Odell of Shawnee, OK, and Kathleen Miller of Harrisonville, MO; and his brother, Kenneth Griggs of Roanoke, VA. He also leaves behind 11 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and many cousins that he loved like brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 3rd at First Baptist Church of Oak Grove. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church. The family is asking that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

We encountered so many adventure as kids, teens and into adulthood.
Richard had a terrific since of humor and an infectious laugh that i will truly miss.
I miss immensely our meetings for lunch with your beautiful wife Carol and sharing our past memories and daily life adventures. I’m so still in denial of your passing and miss you…sleep well my friend.
