Earl W. Turnure Jr.


Earl Wayne Turnure Jr., 77, of Independence, Missouri, passed away Sunday, December 30, 2018 surrounded by family.  Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Eastside Baptist Church, 19901 MO-78, Independence, MO 64057.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 4th at the church.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the family for the establishment of a scholarship in honor of Earl and Sally.

 Earl was born on March 10, 1941, in Atlantic, Iowa, the son of Earl Wayne Sr. and Jeannette Maxine (Gaines) Turnure.  He was a phenomenal athlete, excelling at baseball and basketball.  Earl passed his legacy on to others through coaching and mentoring thousands of young athletes over the past 50 years.  He was very involved in local athletics, coaching Pop Warner Football, Queen City Baseball, American Legion Baseball, and many other leagues, including teams in girls’ softball.  Earl was the founder of the Original’s Softball Organization and was a member of the Fort Osage Athletic Booster Club for over 40 years, serving as President for many of those years.  He also enjoyed fishing, boating, hunting, bowling, and square dancing.  He was a former member of the Road Runners Square Dance Club.  Most of all, Earl loved spending time with his family.  He will be deeply missed.

Earl was preceded in death by his wife Sally; his parents; and brother Dennis “Snoot” Turnure.

His survivors include three daughters: Shelly Watson of Independence, Susan Mathany of Buckner, MO, and Stacey Moore of Independence; two sisters: Karen Turnure of Des Moines, IA, and Diana Gude of Atlantic, IA; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

I remember an old Irish saying “Death leaves a heartache that no one can heal and love leaves a memory that no one can steal.
