Freda L. Hugill


Freda Lee Hugill, 89, of Independence, Missouri, passed away Sunday, July 1, 2018.  Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 6th at New Salem Funeral Home, Independence; burial at 2:00 p.m. in Missouri State Veterans Cemetery, Higginsville, MO.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 5th at the funeral home.

Freda was born February 3, 1929, in Richards, Missouri, the daughter of Ivan W. and Mildred E. (Ewing) Sumner.  A 1947 graduate of Buckner High School, she married Herbert Ellsworth “Cap” Hugill in February 1947.  They lived their early years together in Atherton, MO, and since 1981, have resided in Independence.  They celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary earlier this year.  Freda was a member of the

 Atherton Methodist Church, Overeaters Anonymous, and Al-Anon.  She enjoyed spending time working on genealogy, painting, and traveling.  She worked at Sunshine Biscuits while still in high school, was an Avon Representative starting in the 1940’s, and later managed the Tradex retail store on Independence Square. 

Freda was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Sherry Lynn Baker; and two brothers: Bertis Alvin Sumner and Eugene Wilson Sumner.

Her survivors include her husband, Herbert of the home; son, Herbert Lee Hugill of Greensboro, NC; daughter, Debora Kay Wayman of Independence; six grandchildren: Jennifer Borland and Ashli Wemett, both of Savannah, GA, Stephanie Anspach, Karen Zumwalt, and Michelle Allen, all of Oak Grove, MO, and Cherokee Graves of Windsor, MO; eleven great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren.

  1. We were so sorry to learn of Freda’s passing. She was a special cousin and will be missed. Our last conversation with her was 2 weeks ago. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family at this time. – Robert (Bobby) & Ann Burgess
