George F. Smith Jr.


George Frederick Smith Jr., 70, of Blue Springs, Missouri, passed away on Saturday, April 29, 2023.  Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 13th at Royer Funeral Home in Oak Grove, MO.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Catholic Charities.

George was born October 6, 1952, in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of George Frederick Sr. and Marion May (Melvin) Smith.  He was the Operations Manager for Walkenhorst Transportation, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Elks Club.  George was also a pilot and enjoyed flying a 185 Cessna Plane and riding his 2015 Tri Glide trike.  He was an avid Chiefs fan and loved spending time with his family and friends.

George was preceded in death by his parents, and four brothers, Joe, Ron, Leo, and John Smith.

His survivors include his wife of 38 years, Bonnie Smith of the home; three children: Doug Smith (Kelli) of Independence, MO, Jennifer Shrout (Rick) of Bates City, MO, and Brian Decker (Dustee) of Independence, MO; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Patricia Bourquin (Howard) of Mesquite, TX; two brothers: Tom Smith of DeSoto, KS, and Phillip Smith of Dallas, TX; and many nieces and nephews.

  1. Bonnie, so sorry for your loss. George was a great guy and friend, enjoyed my time with him while working at TDC. The lunches with him and Larry were always a good time. George never knew a stranger and I really appreciated his kind heart and his ability to go above and beyond anytime you needed help with a problem. I will truly miss him and wish I had spent more time visiting with him, I greatly appreciated the text you sent me from his phone earlier this week to notify me of his passing and I know how hard that was for you to do. I wish I could attend the services but I will not be able to get away to do so, I am; however, sending my heartfelt condolences to you and your family.

Bonnie, I just now today 11/22/23 found out about George…Im so sorry George was like a brother as well as Friend..I often think of the times I was in KC working with him while at TDC and he and you would take me out to eater …I just wish I had known this Id been up to the service…My heart , thoughts and prayers are always going to be with you and family….
