Juanita “Nita” A. Thompson


Juanita “Nita” Agatha Thompson of Independence, Missouri passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2026 at the Villages of Jackson Creek from a courageous battle with cancer. 

Memorial Services will be held at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Independence, Missouri at 11:00 a.m., burial following at New Salem Cemetery, Independence, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Nita’s honor may be made to any cancer research organization.

Nita was born on December 20, 1934 in St. Genevieve, Missouri to Nickolas and Edith (Hoog) Grass. She went to school at Fulton School for the Deaf where she met her husband, William Thompson and was nicknamed Queen Bee Of 6 because she was the only girl in her class of 7 and William won the queen.

She was involved with Catholic Charity’s for the deaf, she attended Bible Study’s at Bill & Meriam Barnett house, she loved spending time with all her deaf friends and was involved in several deaf groups. She retired from St. Mary’s Hospital then worked part time at William Chrisman High School lunchroom,

Nita found happiness in gardening and caring for her outdoor flowers. She also enjoyed sewing, working puzzles, and starting her mornings watching The Price Is Right.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, William F. Thompson and 2 sons, David and Frankie Thompson.

Nita is survived in death by her son, Ricky Thompson, sister, Rita Bergtholdt of St. Genevieve, Missouri and brother, Everett Grass of Norfolk, Virginia.

  2. Juanita was a kind, gentle, intelligent, wonderful woman. She adored her husband Bill with whom she lived a lifetime. Ricky is her amazing son she depended on during her final years. Ricky, I’m praying for you as you continue to grieve this great loss. I understand the pain, I’ve experienced it. She loves you…and is your Personal Saint who will watch over you the remainder of your days on earth. We have not lost Juanita and Bill because we know where they are. One day we’ll join them in Jesus’ amazing kingdom of LOVE.
