Richard Harold “Dick” Erickson passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026, at the age of 94.
Dick was born in November of 1931, in Kansas City, Missouri. He spent his early childhood in Liberty and St. Louis before returning to Kansas City, where he graduated from Southwest High School. After earning his degree from the University of Kansas City (now the University of Missouri–Kansas City), he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Following his active military service, Dick began a 31-year career with Hallmark Cards, where he became known for his dedication and leadership. Throughout his life, Dick devoted himself to serving others. He was active in local politics and was a strong advocate for higher education within the University of Missouri System. He volunteered as a business counselor with SCORE, helping entrepreneurs and small business owners achieve their goals. An enthusiastic athlete and coach, he enjoyed participating in and mentoring others through a variety of sports. Dick was also a lifelong supporter of Scouting, serving as both a Boy Scout and Scout leader. His commitment to community service extended to veterans’ organizations, the UMKC Alumni Association, and Governor Christopher “Kit” Bond’s Missouri LEAP program. Much of his professional career centered on safety management, and he was an active member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, where he contributed to advancing workplace safety. Dick shared a remarkable love story with his high school sweetheart, Dorothy. They were married for 61 years and raised two children, Vicki and Rick. Together they enjoyed retirement in the Table Rock Lake area of southwest Missouri, where they created many treasured memories. Following Dorothy’s passing, Dick returned to the Kansas City area and made his home at John Knox Village. There he found companionship and happiness with his loving partner, Carol, with whom he shared 12 wonderful years.
Dick is survived by his children and their spouses, Vicki & Ron, Rick & Renee; his grandchildren, Lauren, Taylor, and Spencer; his great-granddaughter, Avery; his partner, Carol; and many extended family members and dear friends.
Dick will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to service, his generosity, his integrity, and the kindness he showed to everyone he met. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, and he will be deeply missed.
